Kumamon in Everyday Life

Justine Wong art illustrator kumamon suika soda food sketchArtist: Justine Wong

Type: Watercolours

Size: 9″ x 12″

Description: The painting was originally painted as part of the project “21 Days in Japan”, which aimed to explore Japan for the first time; beyond the traditional ways of traveling. It was particularly fitting to present Kumamon, the mascot of Kumamoto, on an everyday object of Japan. Many people do not realize that there is much more to Japan than just the hustle and bustle of Tokyo, or the quaint streets of Kyoto. This simple mascot that is so ‘kawaii’ on commercial products actually represents a whole city and the many communities that live within it.

Kumamoto Spiral 熊本 螺旋

Lionel Antao-shawn antao-drawing-kumamoto-kumamon

Artist: Shawn Antao

Type of Painting: Ink and watercolours

Size: 28 X 35 cm

Description: This mandala was constructed using watercolors with patterns and designs solely based on the theme of Kumamoto and Japanese aesthetics. Starting with the pink cherry blossoms at the center, each level of the mandala brings out a unique noticeable image. The Kumamon (black bear) for example is the mascot of Kumamoto and can be spotted shying away behind Kumamoto Castle’s rooftops. The outer rim of the mandala depicts the Kumamoto castle rooftop painted in blue, as it transforms to take the appearance of violent ocean waves. The artist was inspired by a traditional Japanese painting of “the Great Wave of Kanagawa” (Kanagawa-oki nami ura). Kumamoto castle was not speared from the earthquake and the artist wanted to portray this destruction within the painting.
